W-Fragen vs Ja/Nein-Fragen

German has two main types of questions: W-questions (who, what, where…) and Yes/No questions.

1. W-Fragen (Wh-Questions)

Start with a W-word. The verb is always in 2nd position.

Wer bist du?	Who are you?
Was machst du?	What are you doing?
Wo wohnst du?	Where do you live?
Wann beginnt der Kurs?	When does the course start?
Warum lernst du Deutsch?	Why are you learning German?

2. Ja/Nein-Fragen (Yes/No Questions)

Start with the verb. Answer can be "Ja" or "Nein".

Bist du müde?	Are you tired?
Hast du Hunger?	Are you hungry?
Kommst du morgen?	Are you coming tomorrow?
Kannst du Deutsch sprechen?	Can you speak German?
Magst du Kaffee?	Do you like coffee?

💡 Tip: W-questions always start with a question word and need a full answer. Yes/No questions start with the verb and can be answered with "Ja" or "Nein".
