Pronominaladverbien

Pronominaladverbien are words formed with da(r)- or wo(r)- + preposition. They replace phrases with preposition + noun and make sentences shorter and more fluent.

1. Formation

da(r) + preposition → refers to things (never people). Example: dafür, daran, darauf, damit, darüber …
wo(r) + preposition → used in questions. Example: worauf, womit, worüber …

2. Examples with "da-"

Ich interessiere mich für Musik.
→ Ich interessiere mich dafür.
(I am interested in it.)

Er wartet auf den Bus.
→ Er wartet darauf.
(He is waiting for it.)

Wir sprechen über das Problem.
→ Wir sprechen darüber.
(We are talking about it.)

3. Examples with "wo-"

Worauf wartest du?
→ What are you waiting for?

Womit schreibst du?
→ What are you writing with?

Worüber redet ihr?
→ What are you talking about?

4. Table of Common Prepositions

💡 Important: You cannot use these forms for people. Instead of dabei, say: "Ich spreche mit ihm."
