Nominative Case (Der Nominativ)

The nominative case is used for the subject of the sentence — the person or thing doing the action.

1. Basic Sentence Structure

Subject + Verb + Object

Ich lerne Deutsch. → I learn German.
(Ich = subject, lerne = verb, Deutsch = object)

Der Mann schläft. → The man sleeps.
(Der Mann = subject, schläft = verb)

Ich bin Student. → I am a student.

Es ist kalt. → It is cold.

Wir sind glücklich. → We are happy.

Ihr seid müde. → You all are tired.

Sie sind Freunde. → They are friends.

Sie sind sehr nett. → You (formal) are very kind.

5. Examples with Articles

Der Hund läuft. → The dog runs.

Die Frau arbeitet. → The woman works.

💡 Tip: In German, the verb is always in the second position of the sentence. Example: Heute lerne ich Deutsch. → Today I learn German.
