Damit & Um…zu

Both damit and um…zu express the purpose of an action. The difference is: - damit → when the subject of the two actions is different. - um…zu → when the subject is the same.

1. Damit (so that)

Ich lerne Deutsch, damit ich in Deutschland arbeiten kann.
→ I learn German so that I can work in Germany.

Sie spricht laut, damit alle sie verstehen.
→ She speaks loudly so that everyone understands her.

2. Um…zu (in order to)

Ich lerne Deutsch, um in Deutschland zu arbeiten.
→ I learn German in order to work in Germany.

Er spart Geld, um ein Auto zu kaufen.
→ He saves money in order to buy a car.

Ich gehe früh ins Bett, damit ich morgen fit bin. Ich gehe früh ins Bett, um fit zu sein. I go to bed early to be fit tomorrow.
Sie macht das Licht an, damit die Kinder lesen können. She turns on the light so that the children can read.
💡 Tip: Use um…zu when the subject is the same, and damit when the subject is different.
