Indirect Questions (Indirekte Fragen)

Indirect questions are used to ask something in a politer or more formal way. The verb goes to the end of the clause, just like with other subordinate clauses.

1. Yes/No Questions

Direct: Kommst du morgen?
Indirect: Kannst du mir sagen, ob du morgen kommst?
→ Can you tell me if you are coming tomorrow?

2. W-Questions

Direct: Wo ist der Bahnhof?
Indirect: Ich möchte wissen, wo der Bahnhof ist.
→ I would like to know where the train station is.

Direct Question	Indirect Question	Meaning
Wie spät ist es?	Weißt du, wie spät es ist?	Do you know what time it is?
Warum lernst du Deutsch?	Er fragt, warum du Deutsch lernst.	He asks why you are learning German.
Hast du Zeit?	Ich weiß nicht, ob du Zeit hast.	I don’t know if you have time.

💡 Tip: In indirect questions, use ob for yes/no questions, and W-words (wo, wann, warum, wie …) for W-questions. The conjugated verb always goes to the end!
