Indirekte Fragesätze (Indirect Questions)

Indirect questions are used when we report or embed a question inside another sentence. They often use w-words (wer, was, wann, wo, warum, wie, etc.) or ob (if/whether).

1. With W-Fragen

Direkt:
„Wo ist der Bahnhof?“

Indirekt:
Kannst du mir sagen, wo der Bahnhof ist?

Direkt:
„Wann beginnt der Film?“

Indirekt:
Ich möchte wissen, wann der Film beginnt.

2. With Ja/Nein Fragen → „ob“

Direkt:
„Kommt er morgen?“

Indirekt:
Weißt du, ob er morgen kommt?

Direkt:
„Hast du Zeit?“

Indirekt:
Sie fragt mich, ob ich Zeit habe.

3. Word Order

💡 In indirect questions, the verb always goes to the **end** of the clause. Example: „Ich möchte wissen, wo er wohnt.“ Not: ❌ „wo wohnt er“.

4. More Complex Examples

Er fragt mich, warum ich gestern nicht gekommen bin.
→ He asks me why I didn’t come yesterday.

Ich weiß nicht, ob er schon gegessen hat.
→ I don’t know whether he has already eaten.

Können Sie mir bitte sagen, wie ich zur Universität komme?
→ Could you please tell me how I can get to the university?
