Konjunktiv II

The Konjunktiv II expresses hypothetical situations, wishes, politeness, and unreal conditions. It is very common in B2-level German.

1. Formation

For most verbs → use the **Präteritum stem** + special endings.
For many irregular verbs → use the form with **Umlaut** (if possible).
For complex tenses → use **würde + infinitive** (especially for weak verbs).

2. Examples of Irregular Verbs

3. Usage

a) Hypothetical situations

Wenn ich reich wäre, würde ich eine Weltreise machen.
→ If I were rich, I would travel the world.

b) Wishes

Ich wünschte, ich hätte mehr Zeit.
→ I wish I had more time.

c) Politeness

Könnten Sie mir bitte helfen?
→ Could you please help me?

Ich würde gerne einen Kaffee bestellen.
→ I would like to order a coffee.

d) Unreal Conditions

Wenn er fleißiger gelernt hätte, wäre er nicht durch die Prüfung gefallen.
→ If he had studied harder, he would not have failed the exam.

4. Key Notes

💡 Use würde + infinitive when the direct form sounds strange or outdated. Example: ich würde machen (instead of "machte").

💡 For exams, remember the most common forms: wäre, hätte, würde, könnte, müsste.
