Erweiterte Relativsätze (Extended Relative Clauses)

Relative clauses give more information about a noun. At B2 level, these become more complex with cases, prepositions, and abstract connections.

1. Basic Reminder

Das ist der Mann, der mir geholfen hat.
→ That is the man who helped me.

Hier ist das Buch, das ich gestern gekauft habe.
→ Here is the book that I bought yesterday.

2. Relative Pronouns by Case

Genitiv	dessen	deren	dessen	deren

3. With Prepositions

Das ist der Mann, mit dem ich gesprochen habe.
→ That is the man with whom I spoke.

Hier ist das Thema, über das wir diskutieren.
→ Here is the topic that we are discussing.

4. Genitive Relative Clauses

Der Student, dessen Auto kaputt ist, kommt zu spät.
→ The student whose car is broken is coming late.

Die Frau, deren Kinder hier spielen, ist meine Nachbarin.
→ The woman whose children are playing here is my neighbor.

5. More Complex Examples

Das ist die Stadt, in der ich geboren wurde.
→ That is the city in which I was born.

Das ist das Projekt, an dem wir seit Monaten arbeiten.
→ That is the project on which we have been working for months.

💡 Tips: – Verb always goes to the end in the relative clause. – The relative pronoun matches the gender/number of the noun, but takes the case required by the clause. – Dessen/deren are important at B2 level for expressing possession.
